But before we delve into how much do uPVC doors cost, it is useful to take a look at the various designs and features of these doors, since those features go a long way to determining how much any particular type of uPVC door may cost to buy.

What are the key features of a uPVC Door?

The properties of UPVC doors are such that they are primarily very durable, light and strong. As a type of plastic, for want of a better word, it can also be easily moulded into any shape which give it great flexibility in terms of how it can be used.

It may further serve to separate the different basic types of door, based on their function or main purpose, in order to highlight how those features are applied. So for the purposes of this article, we can talk about two categories:

1. Swing doors: Such as front, back or French doors.
2. Sliding doors: Such as patio & bifold doors.

What are “swing” UPVC Doors?

Swing doors are those that are hinged at the side, so that the opening action is such that the door swings in or swings out. They are such a part of the everyday landscape that we take them very much for granted.

UPVC Front doors and back doors for your home offer the same levels of performance but tend to look much different, in that UPVC front doors will usually have very little glass in them whilst for a UPVC back door the opposite is true.

It’s very common for the front door to be solid and for the back door to be half, or even fully, glazed.

There is one type of UPVC back door that has unique features and that is the stable door style. Most often seen used at the back of a property, a UPVC Stable door is split into 2 halves, top & bottom. The top half can open independently of the bottom.

UPVC French doors are a matched pair of swing doors that can be fitted to either open in or out. Opening from the centre, UPVC French doors can very often be found at the back of a property opening out onto the garden area. They are also used to great effect in conservatory extensions.

What are “sliding” UPVC Doors?

Probably the first thing to come to mind as an example would be the “classic” inline UPVC Patio door. So many homes in the UK have adopted this style over the years, that has to be one of the most popular.

Riding on twin tracks for a 2 door combination, or multiple tracks for installations with multiple panels, UPVC patio doors “bypass” each other as they slide open or closed.

The one thing to note with this type of sliding door, is that because they bypass each other and remain within the tracks, you will always have some amount of obstruction. For example, with a 2 panel door only half the opening will be unobstructed when the doors are open to the maximum.

UPVC Bifold doors are totally different in how they open, even though they are sliding doors. Unlike inline doors which remain in the tracks, UPVC Bifold doors fold together horizontally to stack neatly at the sides of the opening, giving a totally unobstructed entry / exit.

UPVC Tilt & Slide doors / UPVC Tilt & Turn Doors offer yet another variation of functionality in the way they operate.

To look at, tilt & Slide doors when closed, are identical to the average sliding patio door, and indeed, they do slide side to side in exactly the same manner. However, this all changes when you operate the tilt function.

By means of a specialised set of hinges and a simple movement of the door handle, the whole door panel itself can be tilted backwards into the room. The amount the door can tilt backwards into the room is mechanically limited to a safe angle. The tilt action gives a large amount of ventilation without having to open the door.

With a similar tilting function, the tilt & turn door does not slide, but opens like a normal swing door. A point to note is that this type of UPVC door always swings inwards.

Both sliding and swing upvc doors will have some features in common such as:

Performance: 

• Durability: The ability to last a very long time without performance or visual degradation. 
• Lightweight: The frames themselves are “honeycombed” with chambers to further reduce weight. The multi-chambered design of the frames also aids the insular properties and adds to the structural strength.
• Reinforced: Longer sections of profiles will be boosted by internal galvanised metal reinforcing. This helps to ensure the installation retains its’ form without deforming. 
• Material stability: UPVC is mainly non-reactive to most, if not all, air pollutants. It does not rust during prolonged wet periods like metal. Neither does it shrink from drying out, swell from getting wet and is not open to attack by insects such as wooden windows are (woodworm / woodlice etc.).

Security

All UPVC doors are strong by nature, but have built-in extras to make them very secure.

Multi-point locking systems are standard, as is the inclusion of a 3 or 5 lever mortice lock. Once the locks are activated hooks in the doors literally grab onto several points around the door frames making it impossible under normal circumstances to lever them out of position.

Glazed sections, whether in your entrance door, or a big patio door, benefit from toughened glass. If you prefer, laminated glazing can be incorporated.

Energy Efficiency

UPVC itself is a poor conductor of heat or cold, so it does not radiate the temperature from one side of the door to the other to any significant degree. Insulating foam cores can also be fitted to swing door panels to further increase performance.

The colour of your door is optional, with up to 20 different colours in the market, there should be no problem finding the right shade to complement or contrast your property.
